Sewing Gifts

by jrwarfield

Before our little one arrives, I wanted to get a few sewing items out of the way so I didn’t have to worry about them later. Also, both of these family members had birthdays before she was due, and I didn’t want them waiting half the year for me to finally get cracking and sew them their stuff. I also had a complete pregnancy brain moment, and forgot to take any pictures of the stuff I made, but both people sent me pictures without me even having to ask which was awesome!

I sewed my niece Hannah a shirt for her birthday. I used the Skipper Sewing Pattern for it. I used a purple knit fabric, and was so glad to hear that purple is her favorite color as I already had the fabric on hand.

My sister in law asked me if I would be willing to sew her a new chair cover for her Ikea Klackbo chair. It is an older chair so Ikea doesn’t sell any of the replacement covers, and any of the online slipcover places that sell ikea covers don’t sell one for this chair. There is one etsy seller in the UK who carries one,but you pay a ton for it, and pay the exact amount in shipping as you do for the cover which is just crazy talk. So, I went and searched like a crazy person for a pattern or tutorial, but the best I could find was this one and this one.  However, neither are good actual tutorials unless you have the chair there in person. Amanda gave me the muslin cover that the chair came with, and that is what I used to make the cover. I tried to find her some grey corduroy fabric, but I just couldn’t find anything that actually looked good. So I went with this dark grey, duck cotton. I hope it won’t attract hairs too much since she does have pets. I’m still not 100% satisfied with the cover, but it is honestly the best I could get it without having the chair in front of me to work off of. I’m glad she asked me to make it for her however as it was a little bit more fun to give as a gift than a gift card. 🙂 I love sewing things especially gifts for people, but I’m always hesitant to just pick a random project because if they don’t like it, it is a waste of money, time, and I don’t want them feeling awkward or that they have to keep something because I made it.

Anyway, for now, I will claim both projects as successes, and  hope that I can make other fun projects for relatives who want them on occasion. Also, I will note, having a true pattern to follow is sooooo much easier than trying to copy an existing item, but man did I learn a lot.

My daughter is in college and has a KLACKBO from Ikea . I was wondering if you would be interested in making a slip cover for her???
Thank you for your time.

Teresa, you are so sweet. Unfortunately, it would be much better for you to find an etsy sewer to make one for you. I think it would be better quality 🙂
