Dish Detergent

by jrwarfield

There are some things that I have decided to make myself rather than buying, but wanted to try them before I post about them. At our apartment we have an old dishwasher that doesn’t even have a “dry Jet” slot. We really don’t have an issue with things being cloudy or not clean, I just don’t like paying crazy high prices for things. So below is the tutorial and recipe for dish detergent. I have been using it for a few weeks now and it cleans just as well as the other dish deteregents that I normally use. I normally use anything that I can get cheap so sometimes liquid, sometimes powder.

Here are the ingredients used to make the dish detergent which are also the main two ingredients in the laundry detergent recipe that I use. Make sure to have a container that you can label. I just used a tupperware that we hardly use and takes up a lot of space.

First I added the lemon knock off kool aid.

Then I added the Borax and washing soda and mixed it all around.

I made sure to label the container to make sure that it doesn’t get mixed up with something else.

Dry Dish Detergent:

1/2 cup of Broxa

1/2 cup of washing soda powder

2 packets of lemon, no sugar, kool aid packets

Mix all of these together and store in an airtight container. Keep away from children; I use 1-2 Tablespoons of the powder per load.

I also have made liquid laundry detergent which uses almost the same ingredients as the dish detergent. I made this because my friend Ashley posted a great tutorial as well as how cheap it was. It did take some time, but  I loved the results, and they made it worth it. Especially the amount that you have when you are done. We used most of it as well as gave some away as gifts. The next time when we have used all of ours up, I will make the dry version because it takes up less space. I just want to see if I like it more. The recipe is below.

Liquid Laundry  Detergent:

1 Fels Naptha bar(Find this at Walmart in the dish soap isle always on the bottom most shelf)
1 cup of Washing Soda
1/2 cup of Borax

You can add essential oils of whatever you like but I really like that super clean, laundry soap smelling goodness so I don’t.

Follow the instructions on her blog, and use 1/2 cup of detergent per load for a normal top loader and 1/4 cup for the HE front loading variety.

Hope you all have a great weekend, I am so excited because Grant gets home tonight!!!!

I do not understand the Koolaid in the dish detergent thing – for smell or color?

Gail, the lemon koolaid has citric acid in it, instead of buying that, I was just using the koolaid

I also heard to put a very small bowl on the top shelf of the dishwasher with white vinegar in it as a rinse agent and your dishes will be sparkling clean.
